Old friends in not-so-foggy London! (Laura)
Wow I can’t believe we waited so long before going to London for the first time! Thanks to our old friends A.J. and Sarah for moving there, and thanks to Brittany and Colin for planning their honeymoon there AND inviting us to crash the Cotswolds portion with them. We had an amazing time, and not just because we had freakishly good weather.
London is throbbing with that incessant pulse that you can probably only find in a few other cities, like NYC. Yet scattered throughout are little pockets of tranquility. One minute you can be picking your way through a street full of people dressed in Ghost Busters garb on bikes (complete with backpacks broadcasting the theme song), and the next you find yourself meandering through a Japanese tea garden peppered with peacocks. There is always something to see, something to do, and something to drink.
A.J. warmly put us up in his flat in Earl’ s Court, putting us in a great location to walk around and explore. Aside from the obvious highlights of beautiful old buildings like Westminster Abbey and Big Ben and the Royal Palace, we were equally romanced by the edgy and colorful south bank, the pristine parks and the residential areas that maintain little bubbles of peace and quiet in the middle of a busy city. A.J. scored us a couple of truly unique experiences, including tickets to an intimate craft beer festival, and a “secret couch” on the top floor of the Tate Museum’s employees only area, where we enjoyed the view with a cold beer until we got kicked out.
Another London highlight was going out with one of my dear friends who I haven’t seen in almost seven years. Sarah was my closest friend the first year we moved to Virginia, but then she moved back to Australia so we were separated until fate moved her to London just in time for our visit! She planned an awesome night that started with friends at a private cocktail bar in a trendy neighborhood. From there we walked to dinner at a Moroccan place with a lively atmosphere and then continued the party at her (mansion of a) flat in a beautiful neighborhood of London. Between her awesome friends and the fabulous champagne, it was impossible not to have a blast. The next morning she and her friend Craig met up with us and A.J. at a wonderful market/fair across the river where we each chose different stalls from which to stuff or faces. Delicious. Thanks A.J. and Sarah for pulling out ask the stops and showing us such a great time!!!
After four nights in London we were ready to relax, and who better to do that with than our favorite hedonists: Brittany and Colin!!! On to the Cotswolds! (Sneak preview photo.)
